Designed by Solar Dwellings the Quattro Sustainable Home in Queens Park, WA has won the 2008 Building Designers Association (BDA) WA Design Award for Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability, achieving an impressive 7-star rating for thermal performance.
Kingspan Insulation has once again had the privilege of contributing to the success of an award-winning sustainable display home, providing insulation for the walls, which helps to significantly improve its energy efficiency and reduce its energy needs for heating and cooling.
Solar Dwellings Senior Consultant, Ms. Sandii Rogers, says, “Kingspan AIR-CELL®’s ultra-thin profile means it’s an ideal solution for brick cavities. We’ve been using Kingspan AIR-CELL® extensively in our designs not only because its thermal properties improve the overall star ratings but also because of its fibre-free, non-allergenic qualities.”
In addition to low-allergen, low-toxicity materials such as Kingspan AIR-CELL® Insulation, the home also features passive-solar design and orientation, energy efficient and natural lighting, rain-water harvesting and grey water re-use system, and sustainable landscaping.
Ms. Rogers says that despite the challenging 45° North orientation of the site, they were able to incorporate passive solar orientation for the main living area to ensure the winter sun is able to penetrate deep into it for natural warmth.
“The 45° to North is highly important – it really sets this home apart as it takes design solutions such as good insulation to deal with the non-ideal orientation,” says Ms. Rogers.
“Using the WA BASIX modelling tool, it is estimated that, with the 7-star rating, this home will reduce CO2 emissions by 45-57% and water consumption by 45-50% compared to the 2004 WA baseline. It is also estimated that a reduction of a minimum 53% of overall grid powered energy use will be achieved.”
The Quattro Sustainable Demonstration Home presents as an aesthetically stimulating and liveable home that is energy and water efficient, stylish, comfortable, easy to maintain and affordable for the average home owner.
