Steel-framed Wall
- Fix Kingspan AIR-CELL® loosely to the outside of frame leaving flexibility for Kingspan AIR-CELL® to be dished onto the wall cavity.
- Cut Kingspan AIR-CELL® carefully around doors, windows and other openings, so that it neatly abuts to frames.
- Butt join Kingspan AIR-CELL® sheets and tape with a 48 mm wide reinforced foil tape.
- Provide for outer air space by adhering the Kingspan AIR-CELL® Spacer Biscuits™ to the outer face of the Kingspan AIR-CELL® (approximately three (3) Spacer Biscuits™ per square metre required).
- Commence installing cladding in accordance with manufacturer's installation instructions.
Advisory Note: Fibre-cement Cladded Walls
If fibre-cement cladding products are used, the cladding should be fixed by screwing through the Kingspan AIR-CELL Permishield® to the steel frame. Even pressure should be applied to ensure that the upper board overlap is in full contact with the lower board. If gaps occur, close using brad nails.
Care must be taken that the screw gun torque and depth settings are appropriate to apply even pressure on the Kingspan AIR-CELL Permishield® without over-stressing the cladding material, particularly when installing cladding less than 12 mm thick that does not fit flat to the frame. Kingspan AIR-CELL Permishield® 65 should be used when this is the case.
For installations with fibre-cement claddings that are less than 12 mm in thickness the Counter-batten Method is the preferred method.
Counter-batten Method:

- Roll out Kingspan AIR-CELL® horizontally and fix to outside of frame.
- Cut Kingspan AIR-CELL® carefully around doors, windows and other openings, so that it neatly abuts to frames.
- Butt join Kingspan AIR-CELL® sheets and tape with a 48mm wide reinforced foil tape.
- Fix counter battens and exterior cladding.

Steel And Timber-Framed Wall (External side Of Frame)
- Ensure that stud spacings do not exceed 600mm centres.
- Fix Kingspan Kooltherm® K12 Framing Board to the external surface of the frame structure ensuring vertical board joints coincide with a vertical member.
- Ensure that the boards are lightly butted and continuity of insulation is maintained.
- Use large headed galvanised clout nails or screws as temporary fixings prior to the secondary support batten being fitted.
- Fix preservative treated softwood battens vertically to the wall frame, through the insulation sheating, ensuring that the battens and fixings are coincident with the underlying timber studs, top and bottom plates.
- Consider the weight of cladding when selecting the type of fixing and fixing frequency for the battens.
- Fix the external cladding panel to the secondary support batten in the traditional manner.

Mechanical Fixing to Timber Joists or Rafters
Kingspan Kooltherm® K18 Insulated Plasterboard may be used to line ceilings or infill where an exposed rafter is desired. Installation is similar to that of standard plasterboard.
- A minimum of 20 mm bearing onto the timbers must be offered at each sheet joint.
- Sheets should be fixed using either drywall screws or suitable galvanised plasterboard nails located at 150 mm centres.
- Ensure fixings are located no less than 10 mm from the edges of the sheet.
- Fixings should be long enough to allow a minimum embedment of 20 mm into the timber.
- Fixings should be driven straight with the heads embedded just below the surface of the sheet. Care should be taken not to overdrive the fixing.
